1. As you know, Childe Harold's
Pilgrimage introduces the first Byronic Hero produced in
Byron's hands, and after it was published Byron "awoke one morning
to find himself famous." After reading and examining the first 13
stanzas from canto one (including Harold's 10-stanza song),
articulate how the narrator (and Byron) presents this very
first hero. Make sure to draw on different phrases
and lines throughout the stanzas [e.g., "In describing
Harold, the narrator says that he 'ne in virtue's ways did take
delight' (I.ii.2), which means that Harold prefers vice to
virtue"].
2. Regarding the first clip
from Manfred (from Act I), how does Byron
present this version of the Byronic hero? How might he be similar
or different from Childe Harold? Make sure to draw on different
phrases and lines throughout [e.g. "Both appear _______. Whereas
Manfred states that _______, Harold states ______."
3. Regarding the second clip
from Manfred (from Act II, scene iv), what do
you find striking about this scene? Are there any lines that cause
you to consider the scene more carefully and reflectively?
4. Regarding the third clip
from Manfred (from Act III, the play's ending),
share your impressions of this ending. Are there any lines that
cause you to consider the scene more carefully and
reflectively?
5. Discuss the short excerpt from Glenarvon. You
are welcome to draw on all you know about Byron, the Byronic hero,
Childe Harold, and Manfred.
6. Optional Extra Credit Question (4 points): Share four
different lines / passages from Polidori's The
Vampyre(lines must be from various parts of the story).
Describe what these lines share with the modern Vampire legend as
circulated through contemporary TV and film.
