1-Hi everyone, I chose to respond to the question from unit 3
“Does the way "we do gender" affect whether or not we can be
feminists?” The answer is simply no, because an individual's gender
does not define their beliefs. Any person can dress a certain way,
have interest in different things but can still have an opinion
based on any subject including feminism. Being a feminist is the
belief that all genders should have equal rights and opportunities
including men, women, and non binary. Just because someone wants to
dress a certain way or identify as anything other than a woman,
doesn't disregard the fact that you can have a voice on what you
believe is right and help change the world for the
better.
2-hello,
For the second discussion cycle, I would like to address the
question “does the way we do gender affect whether or not we can be
feminists?” Any individual, either man or woman (or however chosen
to identify), can have their own beliefs and values in regards to
the concept of feminism. Before going any further, let's define
feminism as the belief in and advocacy of women's political,
economic, and social equality through organized activity on behalf
of women's rights and interests (Merriam-Webster, n.d.).
If the way we do gender is discriminatory towards femininity and
does not allow for the expression and support of woman, then we
cannot call ourselves feminists. Gender is a social construct
meaning that if we socially construct men to being more
successful or treated with more respect than women, then we are not
supporting feminism. Women often fall to the power of men, or men
are seen to have dominance and superiority over woman and in
today’s society, this is when feminism does not exist.
True feminism is not about treating women better than men,
holding them to higher standard or women gaining dominance, it is
about creating an equal balance in society where both men and women
can equally dominate. For this reason, we must get rid of negative
gender stereotypes and norms. For example, the belief that men are
stronger and more powerful than women ultimately succumbing to
men's power.
If we're able to do gender in a way that is in support and
inclusion of all people and allow the same opportunities to exist
for everyone, then we can be feminists, but if we continue to do
gender in a negative, hierarchical, dominating way then we can
not.
Taking a look back into Unit 3, there was an example about
masculinity that is similar to the feminist topic discussed here.
There are two men who look very different ranging in clothing,
hair, and body language. Even though these two men “do gender”
differently, they are both considered masculine. Similar to how
others can “do gender” differently but still be considered a
feminist.
Feel free to add any opinions or comments based on my response.
Now, for my questions to my peers. What does being a feminist mean
to you? Is it based on how people choose to express their
gender?
