Karen is currently exclusively breastfeeding her 3 month old son
Jacob. The average number of feedings is about 6-8 times a
day including one night feeding. However, Karen is concerned
that is too frequent and that Jacob might be getting more than he
needs. She also thinks it might be appropriate to start
training Jacob to feed less, especially in the middle of the night
so that he can sleep through the night.
1) What are some factors to consider in assessing the
adequacy of Jacob's nutrition? (i.e. how would you know if Jacob is
getting enough and growing appropriately?) List
two.
2) What would be your advice to Karen about her thoughts
on "training Jacob to feed less"? Would it be appropriate or not,
and why? Make sure to explain your answer.
