GROUP ASSIGNMENT The objectives of this assignment are to: 1. Assess the effect and any legal action against the highlighted environmental issues. (CO1P07; A4) 2. Identify the sustainable environmental infrastructure control measures by considering the technical and sustainable factors. (CO1PO7; A4) CASE SCENARIO: The industrial zone at Bagan Indah was established in 2010 covering an area of 2058 hectares. Juta Timur Factory, which has been in operation since 2010, is also located in the industrial zone produces metal for machine and vehicle components. Taman Maju, a residential area in Bagan Indah is located 0.85 km from the industrial zone as illustrated in Figure 1. Some of the processes from the factory emit pollutants into the atmosphere. During the initial crushing and grinding stages of processing and refining mineral ores and scrap metal, metal smelters generate silica and metallic dusts. In addition, sulphur and carbon oxide emissions produced by the factory during the heating and smelting processes. The concentration of Sulphur Oxides (SO₂) and Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) emits from the factory are 1900 µg/m³ and 1500µg/m³, respectively. The presence of chemicals and particulate matter in the atmosphere caused an endanger to Taman Maju residents and it is one of the most crucial factors that contribute to the quality of life and living. The residents at Taman Maju have complained to the environmental protection authorities about industrial pollution from Juta Timur Factory. INSTRUCTIONS: Students need to prepare a technical report based on the highlighted issues that address the following: 1 a) Discuss the health impacts on the air quality level by referring to the Malaysian Ambient Air Quality Standard (MAAQS). b) Assess any legal, laws, acts and punishments that may related with the issues. c) Propose at least TWO (2) sustainable environmental infrastructure control measures in solving the highlighted issues.
