Question 1: Tom, a university student, was backpacking in a remote wilderness region. While pitching a tent in the late afternoon, he tripped and fell toward a branch of a dead tree. In an attempt to break his fall, he extended his arm and sustained a puncture wound to his right palm. Although the wound was painful and bled for a short time, it did not appear to be serious. He fell asleep that night unconcerned about his condition. A round area about an inch in diameter clearly looked abnormal compared to the rest of his hand. The affected part of Tom's hand was also painful, especially when he touched or bumped it. After eight hours of hiking, the sore hand was even more painful. The red area had doubled in size, and a thick yellow discharge oozed from the open wound. Tom felt unusually tired, his body ached, and a brief chill made him aware of a developing fever. Tom's condition continued to deteriorate over the next few days. The small area of redness and swelling had extended to include his entire hand. Its margin of redness was now just above his wrist, and faint red streaks had appeared along the inner aspect of his arm. Tender lumps were noticeable behind his elbow and in his arm pit. He still was feverish and weak. His companions realized that he was too sick to continue hiking and reluctantly agreed to stay in camp and allow him to rest. The next day, they were relieved to find him gradually improving. The red area did not advance past his forearm, although his hand remained painful and swollen. He felt less tired and his fever was gone. Upon hiking out, his friends took Tom to the nearest emergency room. Doctors diagnosed a presumed bacterial infection of Tom's hand, and even though he was on his way to recovery, they prescribed an antibiotic. They remarked that Tom had had a very close call and that he should consider himself very lucky to have recovered on his own. Following the injury to the skin on Tom's hand, indicate (in sequential order) the sequence of cellular and inflammatory responses that occurred at the site of injury within the first 12 hours.
