Grade11_Science Capstone Project June_2022 Mistakes in manufacturing processes due to low quality deficient starting material risk lives and cost millions of dollars to the manufacturing companies. In 2013, there was a massive recall of vehicles that contained Takata Airbag Systems. Airbags deployed at random, and some even exploded and hit passengers with dangerous shrapnel. Two years after the recall began, over 34 million cars in America were recalled. (Refer to the links Video 2 & Resource 8 and the article) Airbags.pdf 4- To make a functional and safe air bag give at least 5 factors you would consider if you were the one designing the airbag. Which factor you think is most important? Explain. 5- An airbag is a safety feature inside a vehicle that would reduce the impact of the collision on drivers and passengers in an accident. Today, airbags are mandatory in new cars to act as a supplemental safety device in addition to a seat belt. Airbags have saved many lives, but only when they deploy properly. You will begin your research on existing airbags. • How does an air bag deploy? Describe the process. Grade11_Science Capstone Project June 2022 What is the chemistry behind an air bag? Write the balanced main chemical reaction and secondary reactions. Identify the type of each reaction. Why are the secondary reactions important? Explain. (Note: Not all air bags have the same secondary reaction.) • How long does it take for an air bag to inflate? Is this timing important? Explain. Do you want to have any chemicals left over in an air bag after it inflates? Explain why. • If 65.1 L at STP of N₂ gas are needed to inflate a real air bag to the proper size, how many grams of NaN: must be included in the real air bag to generate this amount of N₂? How many molecules of sodium are produced? Show your work. (Hint: Use the main chemical reaction.)
