Question 2A (previously an exam question) The kinetics of the following reaction was studied. 2 HgCl₂ (aq) + C₂O4²- (aq) → 2 Cl- (aq) + 2 CO₂ (g) + Hg₂Cl₂ (s) Five separate experiments were conducted, each with a mercury(II) chloride concentration of 1.2×10-³ M and with the oxalate concentrations listed in the table below. For each experiment the natural log of the mercury(II) chloride (In[HgCl₂]) plotted versus time resulted in a straight line with the slopes listed in the table below: [C₂04²-] (M) 0.1 0.2 0.3 0.4 0.5 Slope (s-¹) -1.04×10-7 -4.16×10-7 -9.36×10-7 -1.66x10-6 -2.60×10-6 When plotting the numerical value of the slope versus the oxalate concentration squared, a straight line plot was obtained. This plot had a slope of 8.67×10-³ M-² s¹ and went through (0,0). a. Based on the information given, what can be deduced about the order of reaction for each of the reacting molecules? b.
