Molecules and lons that Exhibit Resonance Sometimes a Lewis structure does not give an accurate representation of the bonding as it is known to exist in nature. For example, sulfur dioxide, SO₂. The Lewis structure for SO₂ may actually be drawn in two different ways, distinguished by the locations of the single sulfur-oxide (S-O) and the double S-O bonds, however, some experimental evidence shows the two bonds are the same length, and this bond length falls between a double and a single S-O bond. The concept of resonance allows us to represent this type of bonding while still using Lewis structures. The actual distribution of electrons in each of the S-O bonds in SO₂ is the average of a double bond and a single bond. We call the individual Lewis structures contributing resonance structures. S O 0 O: Figure 1. Representation of two contributing resonance structures for SO₂. The true structure of SO₂ is not one of the Lewis structures some of the time and the other structure the rest of the time, but is actually a blend of the two contributing resonance structures. Resonance Structures: . Two or more Lewis structures that collectively describe the electronic bonding in a molecule or polyatomic ion. . It usually occurs when you have the central atom bonded to two or more identical atoms and there is more than one choice where to draw a double bond. To draw EQUIVALENT resonance structures, all the resonance structures must have the same number and type of bonds connecting atoms. S:
