2. Naming of Branched Alkanes Many hydrocarbons exist as "branched alkanes," with chains of carbons attached to the main chain. These are named alphabetically according to number of carbons, but with the ending changed to-yl." Prefixes are used if there is more than one branch with the same number of carbons (such as "dimethyl"). Numbers show the branch locations along the main chain. Example: CH CH, CH CH; CH CH CH CH.
