1. A pre-cast L-shaped cantilever retaining wall is to be constructed. The dimensions of the cantilever retaining wall are shown in Figure 1 and the unit weight of concrete can be assumed to be c = 24 kN/m³. The retaining wall is founded on and retains a sandy soil up to a height of 6 m. There is no soil in front of the retaining wall. The sand has a friction angle of o' = 30°. The interface friction angle between the base of the retaining wall and the soil is d = 20°. A small section of the retaining wall was constructed with B = 2.5 m. However, when the backfill reached the top of the retaining wall, sliding failure was imminent, that is, the factor of safety approached 1. The backfill was carefully removed and the small section of the retaining wall was dismantled. A re-design of the L-shaped cantilever retaining wall must be conducted. The re- taining wall must retain a backfill up to the full height of the wall, with no soil in front of the wall, as shown in Figure 1. As the geotechnical engineer responsible for the re-design, determine the required width, B, of the retaining wall such that the design requirements for a factor of safety between 1.5 and 4.0 for both sliding and overturning is satisfied. Show full working out in the answer booklet and justify any assumptions that you made in providing your recommendations for the width of the retaining wall.
