Ok, please discuss the dewatering method or methods you feel would best be applied to the following situation and why? Consider a project I worked on years ago involving a nuclear power plant built on 30 feet of compacted soil. The compacted soil consisted of various soil types ranging from sand to clay in non-uniform layering. The building started settling due to poorly compacted soils. The decision was made to remove the 30 feet of compacted soil and replace it all with concrete. Water entered the compacted soil area from an adjacent river with high river levels affecting the lower 25 feet of the compacted soil to be removed. The river could not be relocated or diverted. The soils were to be removed by hand mining using very small equipment while concrete supports were placed to support the structure. Your assignment is to propose an approach to keep water out of the excavation zone. Good luck! Use the system you feel best protects workers and avoids delays and damages.
