QUESTION 5 A silty sand layer of thickness 2m overlays a clay layer of thickness 3m (refer diagram). A rectangular foundation of dimension 6m x 3m and carrying a total load of 9000 kN (including self-weight) is constructed at the top of the clay layer. It can be assumed that the foundation transmits the load to the soil as a uniformly distributed load (UDL). Assuming the coefficient of volume change of the clay is 6x10-5 m²/kN, calculate the expected long term settlement of the clay under the foundation. Silty Sand: y = 18 kN/m³ 3m 2m WT 200 Clay: Ysat = 21 kN/m³ c' = 40 kPa $' = 15° N centreline 3m (8)
