Question 5. A 1.5 m square footing is founded at a depth of Im (equal to the foundation thickness) in a fine-grained soil with the following properties: Ydry = 20 kN/m³; Ysat = 22 kN/m³; Cu,k = 70 kPa; Ck' = 10 kPa; k' = 30° The load on the footing is vertical but has a maximum eccentricity (e) of 250 mm from one axis (Hint: B' = B - 2e). If the water table is at foundation level, determine the design bearing resistance of the footing for a. short-term condition b. long-term condition
In the questions that follow, use Design Approach 1, Combination 2 from EC7 in your calculations, unless otherwise stated. General tips: • Be careful with the units during calculations: depths/lengths are in m, unit weight is in kg/m³ or kN/m³, pressure/stress is in kPa, concentrated loads (forces) are in kN, line loads are in kN/m. If needed convert everything so that you have consistent units and state them clearly in your answers. If a Figure is not given in the question sketch your problem before starting to solve it.
