Consider Object X stably submerged in a tank containing fluids. The shape and the loca- tion of the object are described in Figure 4. The tank contains a fluid with specific weight 7. The length of the object is L (in the direction perpendicular to the page). Express all answers in terms of R, L, and only. (a) Find the magnitude of the resultant hydrostatic force FAB applied to the surface AB of the object. (b) By calculating the moment of the force, find the location of the point (measured from point A) through which the hydrostatic force acts (center of pressure) on the surface AB of the object. Clearly show the direction of the axis required for the calculation. (c) Find the magnitude and direction of the hydrostatic force FAC applied to the curved surface AC. Note that the arc AC is a semi-circle with the radius R. (d) Find the magnitude and the direction of the total hydrostatic force Ftot applied to Object X. (e) Determine the magnitude and direction of the buoyant force F, applied to Object X. (f) Compare the hydrostatic force Ftot with the buoyant force F. Discuss how they are related.
