An import-export company has plans for the construction of a new warehouse with the dimensions shown in Figure 1. The warehouse is to be designed from timber roof trusses and timber wall frames. Offices are designed to be an integral part of the warehouse. The offices are housed on a raised timber floor system Im above the concrete floor and connected to the concrete floor by timber steps. The plan dimensions for the office area is 5m x 10m. Access to the warehouse is through a 6m door. Windows are provided for lighting. 4m2m 4 12m 2m 4m 4m 5m Office 2m 2m 14m. ► Door Window 24m * Window Window Window Window 3.5m -3.5m- * 3.5m- -3.5m 14m Figure 1: Outline of Timber Structure (NOT TO SCALE) ** + 2m ★ 4m Im 2m 5.5m

Input the truss-column system and the flooring system into Microstran for analysis to obtain the design axial forces, bending moments, shear and bearing forces for checking if your design is adequate or requires redesign. Use sketches in conjunction with your calculations to enable the marker to visualise your design process. A series of calculations on their own without sketches can be difficult to comprehend. Loads and Load Combinations Determine the loads to be applied to the structure: (0) Permanent load: a. Self-weight: This based on the sections chosen. Please note that Microstran also has timber grades for you to choose from. b. Roofing and Cladding: see AS1170.1 for the self weight of different construction materials (ii) Imposed Load: the magnitude of live load is defined in AS1170.1. Wind Load: the wind load is given. Determine the load combinations based on AS1170.0. The standard AS1170.0 defines the factors that can be used in the load combinations for example 1.2G+1.50. These combinations are important for the analysis. Analysis Results: (a) Input your truss-column system model or floor system into Microstran to determine the actions effects. (b) Define the different loads (permanent, imposed and wind). (c) Define the different load combinations and

(d) Analyse the structure and determine design loads for each member type (top chord, bottom chord, vertical members, diagonal members, columns, bearers and joists). (e) Summarise the design loads for each member type for use in checking if the member can carry the design load (N*, V* and M*).

Using software such as Microstran, compute the values of axial forces (compression and or tension) N*, shear V*, and bending moments M* in each type of member of the structure resulting from the critical load cases and determine the maximum values of these actions to be used in the member design. Note that for a given member, the maximum values for each action may result from different load cases.
