v (m/s) 817.32 t(s) 19.46 102.775 A sounding rocket is launched from sea level. Its speed is shown as a function of time in the graph above. The rocket has an initial mass of 810.7 kg.l The flight is built up of two phases: 1) The propelled phase during the first 19.46 s In this phase the rocket is propelled by the rocket engine. 2) The 'coasting' phase from 19.46 s onward In this phase the rocket engine has burned out. Assume that gravity does not change with altitude and that air resistance can be neglected. Questions: a) Determine the acceleration during the first phase. b) Draw a free body diagram and a kinetic diagram for the first phase of the flight and use that to calculate the thrust of the rocket at time t = 0 c) Determine the acceleration during the second phase. d) Calculate the maximum altitude the rocket reaches.
