In the friction wheel mechanism given in the figure below, the
wheel number 1 rotates and the wheel number 2 is the rotated one.
Power transmission between these two wheels is provided by the
number 3 "idler" wheel. By moving this impeller in the horizontal
direction, variable rotation rate is obtained. The wheels are the
same(1 and 2). The coefficient of friction between the impellers is
πœ‡ = 0.25. Input power 𝑃 = 2 π‘˜π‘Š speed is 950 rpm and the efficiency
of the mechanism is 0.96.
a) What are the largest and smallest output revolutions that can
be obtained in this system?
b) What are the maximum and minimum output torque values that
can be obtained in this system?
c) In order for the said power to be transmitted, the wheels
must be pressed against each other with at least how much
force?
