Statement A manufacturing plant is working on the development of a new set of aluminum plates. One of the special characteristics of this new product is the part length. Following the APQP guidelines, all special characteristics need to be controlled and the respective APQP tasks related to special characteristics quality control need to be completed before the product manufacturing begins. One of the APQP tasks during the product development is to create an MSA plan for the special characteristics. The MSA Plan is normally done by the Quality Engineer or Process Engineer, and can include the 3 MSA steps studied in this course (Resolution, Accuracy and Precision). The part length specification of one of the aluminum plates is 202.500 mm +/-0.150 mm. The part length is planned to be measured by the quality inspector once every hour, when running production, under normal ambient conditions. There is only one shift per day in this manufacturing plant. Use the following steps to create an MSA plan that is going to be used to evaluate the measurement system for measuring the part length of this aluminum part: 1 Fill out the Group information in "Group Info" sheet (no marks) - no marks 2 Identify the required measurement system elements in "Measurement System" sheet (5 pts) Perform the resolution study in the "Resolution" sheet (4 pts) a) Calculate the required instrument resolution (2 pts) b) Identify a suitable measuring instrument for this application (to obtain variable data) based on the required resolution. What resolution would you choose for this instrument? Attach a picture if possible. (2 pts) 4 Plan the Stability Study in the "Stability" sheet (6 pts) a) Create a detailed procedure to conduct the stability study for this measurement system (list only the steps involved to obtain the measurements, not the analysis)- refer to the stability study procedure, but be specific with each step including, but not limited to, the sample size, sample frequency, number of samples (number of subgroups), who will be measuring the parts and what instrument will be used-marks will be deducted for general statements (5 pts) b) Create a table to collect the stability measurements (1 pt) Plan the Bias Study in the "Bias" sheet( 6 pts) a) Create a detailed procedure to conduct the bias study for this measurement system ( list only the steps involved to obtain the measurements, not the analysis)-refer to the bias study procedure, but be specific with each step including, but not limited to, the number of measurements, who will be measuring the part and what instrument will be used- marks will be deducted for general statements (5 pts) b) Create a table to collect the bias data (1 pt) Plan the GRR Study in the "GRR" sheet (6 pts) a) Create a detailed procedure to conduct the GRR study for this measurement system (list only the steps involved to obtain the measurements, not the analysis)-refer to the GRR study procedure, but be specific with each step, but not limited to, the number of parts, number of appraisers and number of trials-marks will be deducted for general statements (5 pts) b) Create a table to collect the GRR data (1 pt) Please Note: An MSA Plan is normally created before the product and the process designs are fully developed. Therefore there is no data at this point because the parts are not available yet. This is only a plan to ensure that we are ready to perform the MSA study when the parts are available. The instructor will provide all the data you need for the MSA study (Assignment 18) based on your MSA plan requirements. 3 6
