Concepts Modules 14-15 Objective: Understand the function of the network at layers 4-7 of the OSI Model. This deals with the establishment and management of the end to end connection, formatting data, and managing services. You are expected to understand workings of TCP and UDP and be able to identify the functions and layer 4 ports associated with the various network services. Task: Research and answer the following conceptual questions, in your own words. (30 points total) 1. (5 points) List 5 common ports and their associated protocol (service) 2. (3 points) What are the three steps of the TCP 3-way handshake? 3. (2 points) What are the features of TCP and what types of transmissions require TCP? 4. (2 points) What are the features of UDP and what types of transmissions are best served by UDP? 5. (2 points) What two address components make up a socket? 6. (1 point) What is the function of TCP sequence numbers? 7. (3 points) Define "peer-to-peer" network and provide 2 examples of a peer-to-peer networks 8. (3 points) What are 3 common HTTP message types? 9. (5 points) Explain the DNS name resolution process for Amazon.com starting with the host checking it's local DNS cache and proceeding through a recursive lookup where the local server uses a forwarder (not root hints). 10. (1 point) Why is it recommended to use DHCP on larger networks? 11. (1 point) Explain how you could use a combination of DHCP and Static IP addresses? 12. (2 points) What is the difference between FTP and SMB?
