(b) Glutamate is one of the most abundant excitatory neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. It is known, however, that aspartate also binds to some glutamate membrane transport protein archaeal homologues such as GltPh. (i) Write a chemical equation to describe the reversible binding of aspartate to GltPh and give an expression for the dissociation constant for this binding process. [5%] (ii) The Kd values for glutamate and aspartate have been determined using Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) to be 2.5 mM and 50 μM, respectively. Explain which amino acid binds tighter and why. [10%]
