A hydraulic-jump stilling basin having the same width as the spillway crest is to be provided. The design unit discharge is 20 m²/s and the elevation of the spillway crest is at 200 meters above mean sea level. The tailwater depth is computed using the Manning's Equation and the tailwater surface elevation is found to be 182.7 meters above mean sea level. The engineer assumed that the stilling basin is of USBR Type II stilling basin and as such he assumed that the tailwater depth is 1.05 times the downstream conjugate depth (Yn=1.05Y2). Determine the floor elevation of the stilling basin and verify if a Type II USBR stilling basin is appropriate. What is the required length of the basin? Hint: Critical depth occurs on top of the spillway crest. Type II Stilling Basin Length 200 m 182.7 m Y2 6 8 14 10 12 Froude number Z=? (c) Sections O ₁ 32 16 18
