Question 1 The soil stratification at a particular site is shown in Figure 1. Bored piles of 900 mm diameter and 19m length are to be installed at the site. The ground water table is at the ground surface and the soil parameters are listed in Table 1. a) Calculate the following for long-term conditions: (i) The end-bearing resistance of the pile. (8 marks) (ii) The shaft resistance of the pile. (14 marks) iii) The ultimate axial capacity of the pile. (4 marks) b) Factors of safety of 1.6 and 2 are applied to the pile's shaft and end bearing capacity respectively. Explain whether the pile can carry a vertical compressive load of 1 MN safely in the long-term. Is the pile design economic? If not, explain how the economy of the pile design can be improved.
