A cross-flow heat exchanger is used to heat water in an industrial plant (Figure 4). Hot air, at a temperature of 180 °C, enters the exchanger at a flow rate of 0.10 kg s1 and a flow speed of 2.0 m s1. The water has a flow rate of 0.08 kg s1 in the tube, which has an outer diameter of 25 mm, is 1.0 mm thick and is 100 m long in total.
