7.) The common ionic charge for both Hafnium and Zirconium is +4. Calculate Slater's shielding constant, o, for a 4p and a 4d electron in Zr and for a 5p and a 5d electron in Hf. Calculate the effective nuclear charge, Zerr, experienced by a 4p and a 4d electron in Zr and for a 5p and a 5d electron in Hf. Taking into account the electron configuration of the tetravalent cation AND the atomic radius of the neutral atom (Zr = 145 pm and Hf = 144 pm) AND the Zeit's you just calculated above... Will the sizes of the tetravalent cations be about the same, or significantly different? Which tetravalent ion will be more polarizing, if either?
