A protein (P) was purified and its mass was determined by gel-filtration chromatography to be 80 kD. Chromatography in the presence of urea yields a 40 kD species (Q). When the chromatography is repeated in the presence of urea and b- mercaptoethanol, a single molecular species (R) of 20 kD is obtained. How are the molecular species P, Q and R related? Describe the structure of protein P in terms of Q and R. (2 marks)
