2. Earthworm Anatomy Earthworms are in the phylum Annelida. Annelida in Latin means, "little rings," and the body of the earthworm is segmented and looks like many little rings joined together. The earthworm is made of about 100-150 segments. Earthworms are the main contributors to enriching and improving soil for plants, animals and even humans. They create tunnels in the soil by burrowing, which aerates the soil allow air, water and nutrients to reach deep within the soil. Earthworms also eat the soil, which has organic matter such as decaying vegetation or leaves. Plants cannot use this organic matter directly but they can use it after it has been digested by earthworms. Watch the following YouTube video to learn about the anatomy of the earthworm and answer the questions below. 1. What is a clitellum? 2. Where is the mouth of the worm, at the anterior end or the posterior end? 3. Which side of the earthworm is darker, the dorsal or ventral? 4. Where are most of the organs, at the anterior end or posterior end? 5. What is the name of the hollow body tube in the worm? 6. Insert a screenshot of the researcher cutting the septa away from the skin 7. What do earthworms eat? 8. What is the name of the solid waste castings that are expelled from the earthworm? 9.
