Q1: Spectroscopy. Answer all parts. (a) Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) is a very useful measurement technique based on fluorescence spectroscopy. Explain using appropriate, clearly labelled diagrams and relevant formulae the basis for this phenomenon. Describe in reasonable detail the key factors which govern FRET efficiency. [50 marks] (b) Describe briefly, with appropriate diagrams, at least two applications where FRET could be used in biological sciences. [20 marks) (c) Consider the FRET case where you have a single donor and acceptor where the distance (r) between them can be varied. Plot the dependence of the energy transfer efficiency on the distance between donor and acceptor. [15 marks] (d) What is the transfer efficiency when the donor and acceptor are separated by 2R0, 0.2Ro, and 0.5Ro? [15 marks
