A comparative country analysis
Involves both country and industrial levels of application of
Porter’s Diamond model and relevant theories to understand
competitive advantage for the two countries in their specific
industries.
Japan, USA, and the Video Gaming Industry
Collect data about countries and industry to:
Present your analysis of the chosen industry; Overview of the
two countries’ performance in the chosen industry; Explain the
determinants of the countries’ competitiveness: analysis of
national competitive advantages with their endowments;
macro-economic conditions; micro-economic conditions and relevant
institutional and resource factors via Porter’s diamond model; Make
your recommendations for greater competitiveness.
Enrich these factual data from the countries and industry with
relevant theoretical discussions e.g., culture, national business
systems, Heckscher-Ohlin modelling, institutional typology etc. and
apply them with Porter’s Diamond Framework.
Recommended Structure:
- Introduction
- Overview of Chosen Industry (Cluster):
Briefly describe your chosen industry, observing the relative
competitiveness of that industry cluster. Start with an overview of
the industry’s characteristics and structure. Then consider this
industry globally i.e., this is where you link it to your two
chosen countries.
- Overview of the Two Chosen Countries: Briefly
introduce the two countries you have named as your chosen economies
and why you selected these to compare for this specific industry.
You can begin to provide figures (graphs, diagrams etc.) and/or
tables to show each country’s economic performance and drivers
which lead to their positions in your chosen industrial field e.g.,
major contribution to country’s GDP. This can either be as two
separate sections, one country per section, or as a merged section
that compares data side-by-side.
- Porter’s Diamond Model - Comparative Analysis of
National Competitive Advantage in the Chosen Industry: Use
Porter’s Diamond Model to recognise how the industry is positioned
and is operating in the two countries. Apply all 6 elements. In
line with overview of the two countries, and by using relevant
theory, compare the competitive advantages of the two countries.
You can apply different schools of thought on national advantages
towards industrial competition in the global market and compare and
contrast the two countries.
- Observations of Competitiveness: Having
completed, and presented, your analysis of national competitive
advantage, you can now draw out potential challenges or weaknesses
that affect the countries’ competitive advantage. You can provide
recommendations on how each can meet these challenges and even
improve their competitive advantage.
- Conclusions: In two to three paragraphs,
summarise the key concepts of your analyses and suggestions to meet
current challenges and possible identify future threats.
