Q3. PAVEMENT DESIGN a) Explain the main techniques used for soil stabilisation. (5 marks) b) Explain the main differences between contraction and construction joints and show on clearly annotated sketches where they are used. (5 marks) c) The number of commercial vehicles using a newly opened section of a dual carriageway road is estimated at 1000 vehicles per day. Assume that the type of pavement is flexible, the design life is 40 years, the subgrade is mainly consisting of silty clay material, the water table in the surrounding area is high and using thin construction with average quality drainage. Produce a detailed design for the different layers of the road using the Tables and Charts from the standards. Assume sub-base layer stiffness equal to 150 MPa. Use foundation class 2, EME2 asphalt material and follow a performance design approach for a single foundation layer. Specifically, define: i) Sub-base thickness (4 marks) ii) Total asphalt layer thickness (7 marks) iii) Surface, binder and base layers thicknesses (4 marks) (Clearly mark and identify all the design charts that you have used in your answer and submit all design charts and tables with your answer).
