(a) A remote concentrator unit is used to connect a group of 100 voice subscribers to an exchange. During the busy hour it is found that the total traffic from the group is 20 Erlangs. (i) From the extract of the Erlang blocking probability table provided, calculate the number of trunk circuits required between the concentrator unit and the exchange if a 1% Grade of Service is to be provided. How much traffic is lost? Comment on the efficiency of the use of each trunk circuit under these conditions. (ii) The data rate of one standard E1 multiplexer is 2.048 Mbits/s. Each trunk circuit of the above concentrator works as a voice channel with a data rate of 64 kbits/s. To connect the concentrator and the exchange, a framing channel and a signalling channel will be added. The data rate for each channel is 64 kbits/s. Evaluate whether an E1 multiplexer is suitable to connect between the concentrator unit and the exchange. [10 marks]
