(a) With the aid of appropriate diagrams, explain what is meant by inter-symbol- interference (ISI). Explain why raised cosine filtering can reduce the required bandwidth of a transmitted signal but without introducing ISI. (b) What is the main objective of matched filtering? Explain the matched filtering criteria by considering the amplitude and phase responses. (c) A wired communications link is designed to cover a distance of 1 km and have an overall end-to-end probability of error of no more than P₂ = 4 x 10-5. The link uses binary polar signals with voltage levels of ±0.5 V. The link uses cable with a loss of 17 dB km-¹ and has single amplifying repeater at its mid-point. (i) What is the maximum RMS noise voltage that can tolerated with the current link? (ii) A new replacement link is being considered that uses much cheaper cable. The new cable has a much higher loss of 43 dB km-¹, is only available in maximum lengths of 250 m and needs to be used with a digital regenerative repeaters. Assuming the same RMS noise voltage as in (i), could a link made from such cable and repeaters meet the error probability requirement? (iii) What is the maximum RMS noise voltage that could be tolerated with the new digital repeater bases link while still meeting the error probability specification?
