As part of the same site but in a different network, the client
would like to use an existing nearly fully
loaded transformer to deliver 600kVA to another industrial load
with a power factor of 0.8, this time
using a connection to the main grid. The client is anticipating a
growth in active power demand of 25%
for this load in the near future. One of your colleagues has
suggested the use of capacitors to
accommodate this growth without violating the transfomer’s capacity
limit.
1) Your line manager has asked you to calculate the total reactive
power that these capacitors
would need to provide so the client won’t have to purchase a larger
transformer.

2) What other measure could be taken to avoid the transformer from
overloading? Justify your
answer and highlight benefits and potential drawbacks of the
solution proposed. [15 Marks]
