In the 1960s, Walt Disney orchestrated
the largest land purchase in the history of the United States,
acquiring approximately 27,000 acres in Orange County, FL to build
Disney World. He had just opened Disneyland in 1955 in Anaheim,
California, because Burbank, California did not approve of his
plans for an amusement park. Disneyland contains 250 acres of land,
while Disney World encompasses over 100 times that size, including
its own tax district, the Reedy Creek Tax District. In hindsight,
Walt Disney must have envisioned a massive entertainment and living
community that was apparently not feasible in Anaheim. Using the
MSA data we have already examined in class, explain Walt Disney’s
decision to invest in Orange County, FL and not expand investment
in Orange County, CA (Anaheim, CA) in terms of anticipated land
costs, workforce availability, affordability for employees and
guests, and demand for guests.
