Nitric acid is produced in several stages. In the second stage, two reactions are carried out in an absorption apparatus containing water. Initially nitric oxide is oxidized to yield nitrogen dioxide. This gas is then readily absorbed by the water, yielding the desired product (nitric acid, albeit in a dilute form). while reducing a portion of it back to nitric oxide: The NO is recycled (it joins the fresh NO feed), and all of the HNO3 and unreacted NO₂ leave the system. [You can ignore water in all calculations]. The equations are: 2 NO (g) + O2(g) → 2 NO₂ (g) (1) 3 NO2 (g) + H₂O (1)→ 2 HNO3 (aq) + NO (g) (2) Equation 1 gives a 98% yield of NO2; while equation 2 gives a 100% yield of HNO3. (a) For a plant that produces 300 kg HNO3 a day, calculate how much NO is recycled per day in kg mol. [2] (b) For a plant that produces 300 kg HNO3 a day, calculate how much fresh NO must be fed per day in kg mol. [4]
