1. Your obtuse and wealthy uncle Mortis hands you a diamond from
his heisting days. He asks you to prove that it is real and not
glass and not zircon. The real diamond has an index of 2.4 whereas
glass is only 1.5. Zircon is closer at 2.1. You also have a red
(660nm) laser.

a. Determine the speed of red light in all three of these
substances.
b. Determine the wavelength of red light in glass.
c. If the incident angle (shown in the picture as θI)
is 28 degrees, what angles of refractions would be expected for
diamond and zircon?
d. When he was on Lamma Island, Mortis heard about using
the critical angle to verify that the diamond was real.
Explain to Mortis what a critical angle is and predict which
substance would have the smallest critical angle. Be sure to
discuss total internal reflection
e. You also explain that higher frequency light can have a
slightly higher index of refraction. If this is the case,
what angle of refraction would we expect for blue light traveling
from air into diamond if the incident angle was 40 degrees?
f. If blue light has a wavelength of 400nm in air,
determine its wavelength in diamond.
