Consider a system of N distinguishable particles, which can occupy either of the two energy levels: &o = 0 or &₁ = ε > 0. The upper energy level (&₁ = ) is doubly degenerate (i.e. there are two different states with the same energy value). Energy levels E 0 The total energy of the system is E. Using the microcanonical ensemble, find: a) the number of microstates (E, N) b) the entropy S(E, N), applying the Stirling approximation for large N.
