QB4 -NEWTON'S LAWS OF MOTION (a) A package of mass 40 kg is placed on a sledge of mass 3kg initially at the rest on the icy surface of frozen lake. A constant horizonal force is applied to the sledge which then start to move at a constant speed. Find the magnitude of the force, if coefficient of the friction u=0.03. (1 mark) (b) The sledge with the package stops on the horizontal rough patch. To move it the horizontal force is increased to 130 N. Find the coefficient of friction between the sledge and the rough surface. (2 marks) (c) If constant horizonal force of magnitude of 130N is applied to the sledge with package moving on ice, find the distance travelled in 5 seconds. (3 marks) (d) An object of mass 50 kg slides from the rest down on the inclined plane of the length of 60m, starting at the top. If the coefficient of friction is 0.3, calculate how long it will take to reach the bottom of the incline. (4 marks)
