A new hormone, call it eckertone, is discovered in some obscure
species of bird. Preliminary analysis shows it to be a steroid
produced by the gonad, and hydrophobic in nature. There is no gene
for eckertone: its secretion is regulated by signalling pathways
that target the enzymes that synthesize this hormone. At the target
tissues, it binds a G-protein linked receptor on the cell
membrane.
