The promotion of flowering in response to a prolonged exposure
to cold temperatures (i.e. winter) is a useful adaptation for plant
species that flower in the spring. To determine the genetic
mechanism for this, you examine two ecotypes of a common plant
species. You identify a protein (X) that you believe is involved
and you collect the following data to help you examine this
relationship.
Table 2: Experimental data for growth conditions and days to
flower for two contrasting plant ecotypes

1. Is X an activator or repressor of flowering? What
experimental variable does it respond to? Explain your logic by
referring to the data.
