4 2. Plants are known as autotrophs because they can produce
their own food from sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. However,
animals are heterotrophs because they need to feed on other
organisms to supply their essential food for survival. Scientists
found a new animal species that use the Shikimate pathway to
produce some of the essential enzymes when they need to. In light
of this difference between autotrophs and heterotrophs, explain why
glyphosate may have little toxicity to this new animal species.
