Name: Problem 3 [Objectives: Understanding groundwater hydrology/Darcy's law/assumptions of the law] An owner of a service station in Central Valley California, that is located near a stream, has discovered that the service station's Underground Storage Tank (UST) has been leaking ever since switched to a gasoline containing Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE). As discussed in class, MTBE is an anti-knocking compound added to the gasoline after Tetra Ethyl Lead that was previously used to increase the Octane number of gasoline was banned in Clean Air Act, 1990. The owner, under the State of California's law, had to remove the UST. She has called the School of Engineering for help in measuring how fast MTBE would reach the stream nearby, She has sent us the sketch bellow, identifying the location of the removed UST as the contaminant source. How fast will the MTBE travel from the point of the contamination to the stream (from points A to B in the schematic bellow)? ------meters per sec. Note: Please make the necessary assumptions as mentioned in class lecture including the fact that MTBE has high miscibility with water and moves with the speed of the ground water.
