The example consists of the stability computations for the slope shown in Figure 1 below. The slope consists of an embankment resting on a primarily sand foundation with a 0.5 m thick layer of soft, saturated clay. For Case 1, the factor of safety is calculated for the single, noncircular shear surface shown in Figure 1 as a dashed line. For Case 2. an automatic search is conducted to find a more critical shear surface (if available), beginning with the shear surface analyzed in Case 1. For both scenarios, compute the factor of safety for the assumed slip surface using appropriate slices. Use the required appropriate equilibrium procedure(s) and other assumptions during the limit equilibrium modeling. Explain whether or not you think the factor of safety that you calculated is a minimum. Note that you have to support your answer with any relevant calculations from different solutions. For both scenarios, compute the factor of safety for the assumed slip surface using appropriate slices.
