The following results were obtained from an oedometer test on a specimen of saturated clay. Effective 25 50 100 200 400 stress (kPa) 200 50 Void ratio 0.96 0.93 0.89 0.76 0.62 0.63 0.65 a) Plot e vs logo' b) Determine pre-consolidation pressure (p), recompression index (Cr), compression index (C.) and swelling index (C). A layer of this clay 6-m-thick (having an average initial void ratio of 0.92) lies below a 4-m depth of sand, the water table being at the ground surface. Below the clay there is a gravel layer. Saturated unit weight for all soils is 18 kN/mº. A 5-m-high fill of unit weight 21 kN/mºis placed on the ground surface over an extensive area. c) Calculate the total settlement due to consolidation of the 6-m-thick clay layer d) Find the coefficient of consolidation, if in an oedometer test on an undisturbed sample of this clay, 19-mm thick specimen (drainable from top and bottom) reaches 50% average degree of consolidation in 5 minutes. e) How much time it will take for the 6-m-thick clay layer to complete 95% average degree of consolidation f) Find average degree of consolidation of the 6-m-thick clay layer when the settlement is 10 g) Find the "total" and "excess" pore water pressure at 1 m depth below from the top of clay when the degree of consolidation at that depth" is 30%. h) Starting from t=0, till the time you found in part (e), using Excel, calculate and plot "settlement versus time" graph (time in horizontal axis, settlement in the vertical axis, increasing in downward direction). You can select a certain time increment to do your calculations, such as for t=4 months, so you would calculate settlement at times of 0. 4.8. 12, 16 ... months etc (or you can choose 2 months, or 6 months, as your time increment). Give your results as a table and settlement versus time" graph cm.
