previous problem,
A trench was excavated in the soil at a site. The dimension of
the trench was following, length 50m, width 0.5m and depth 800mm.
An undisturbed cylindrical soil sample was collected before the
excavation. The sample prepared had a length, 70mm and diameter of
35mm. The original mass of the sample was 101.5gm whereas after the
oven drying become 67.3gm. Again, the sample was submerged in the
water to make it fully saturated. After full-saturation the sample
mass was measured to be 109.0 gm.
The soil initial soil obtained from the trench was stockpiled
and then used as a trench backfill. The soil is to now be compacted
in to the trench in uniform layers at a density of 1800
kg/m3 and a moisture content of 14%.
the initial water content of the soil after excavation -
50.81%
b. in-situ void ratio of the
soil -1.626
c. the type of soil (i.e.
clay or sand) based on initial void ratio - sand
d. dry density of
in-situ soil - 0.9988
e. soil density of in-situ
soil - 2.62
f. bulk density of
in-situ soil- 1.507
g. specific gravity of the
soil - 2.62
h. initial degree of
saturation - 82.01
i. final dry density of
the backfill- 1578.94
j. final void ratio
after backfill- 0.67
k. final degree of saturation
of the backfill -54.74

a. b. Using the information from the previous problem, find the shrinkage properties of the backfilled soil. Given, during the shrinkage test of the backfilled soil the soil patty had a moist mass of 44gm with initial volume 20.11ml. While the volume of the dry soil patty was 19.2 ml. Find the following, mass of the dry soil patty shrinkage limit of the soil shrinkage ratio of the soil d. specific gravity of the soil and explain if the specific gravity matches with the initially excavated soil. volumetric shrinkage f. linear shrinkage. C. e.
