A beam of length L is clamped at x1 = 0 and subject to a distributed load q over 0 < x; <L/2 as shown below. The end at x1 = L is free. The beam has a uniform square cross-section (with the square side length being a) and uniform Young's modulus E. X₂ 9 >X1 L/2 L/2 a) What is the deflection and the slope at x1 = L/2? b) For L/2<x> <L, what can you say about the moment and the curvature? Will the curvature be zero or non-zero? What does this say about the shape of the beam in this region? Justify your answer. c) Using the answers to part a) and b), calculate the deflection at the free end. d) Where (i.e., at what xı) is the maximum moment in this beam? e) Where (i.e., at what x, and X2) is the maximum stress in this beam? What is the value of the maximum stress?
