Nitrous oxide (N2O) is used as an anesthetic
(laughing gas) and in aerosol cans to produce whipped cream. It is
a potent greenhouse gas and decomposes slowly into
N2 and O2:
2N2O(g) → 2N2(g) +
O2(g)
If a plot of ln[N2O] vs. time is linear, and the rate
constant of the reaction is 6.80 ×
10-3 s-1 at 500K,
(a) The reaction is 1st order with respect to
N2O.
(b) How many seconds will it take for the concentration of
N2O to reach 1.5625% of its original concentration?
