The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is part of the caudal diencephalon just between the zona incerta (ZI) and lateral hypothalamic area (LHA). STN projection neurons are GABAnergic. Strokes or other injuries to the STN cause hemiballismus. In the hyperdirect pathway (shown by the blue arc above), cortical neurons bypass the striatum. The motor part of the STN is a target for high-frequency deep-brain stimulation (DBS-STN) in surgical treatment of Parkinson disease that can no longer be managed with levodopa.
