We talked about how demographical social science
researchers study groups of people to better understand society.
People born in the same time period often exhibit similar responses
and preferences.
A generation is a group of people, all born within a
particular timeframe, who tend to share common experiences,
including music, clothing, and language. Sociologists, who study
relationships in society, have considered the characteristics that
are common to people in a generational group.
Perhaps you have already encountered terms like Baby
Boomers, Generation X, or Millenials. Baby Boomers, for example,
are people who are mostly born after World War II from 1946 to
1964. These dates change depending on the country. For example,
Canada’s Baby Boomer generation are actually born from 1952-1965
while England’s Baby Boomer generation are born from
1945-1965.
This is one of the largest living generational groups
today. They are known for being one of the most educated,
longest-living, and fittest generations. Many members of this
generation grew up during the 1960s and tended to challenge
traditional values. As they age, Baby Boomers are transforming how
aging is perceived. Society has to rethink the social, financial,
and economic supports necessary for thriving during the later
stages of life. Now read this excerpt from “The whys and hows of
generations research” and build your understanding by answering the
following questions.

Why is quantitative data useful here?
Why is qualitative data useful here?

individual development?
