SCENARIO 1: We gather college students to see if their use of caffeine helps them stay more alert during classes. We randomly assign half the students to drink a caffeinated drink in the morning, and the control group drinks only water in the morning. During their 90 minute morning class, we measure how many minutes they stayed alert generating an alertness score that ranges from 0 to 90. The higher the score, the more "alert" they were during class.
SCENARIO 3: In order to find out if the amount of sleep we get is significantly related to our daily mood, we gather a sample of individuals and ask "how much sleep do you average every week" and have them take a "mood survey" that generates a score from 0 to 150, with higher scores meaning a "better mood".
