A Dachshund breeder raises and sells pups just after weaning.
She knows that when she gets a long haired dapple colored pup that
she can ask the full $600 but if they are not dapple and short
haired she can only get about $300. Currently her in the past her
mated female has birthed 2 dapple long-haired pups out of 6
total for the litter. She is hoping to use genetics to increase the
odds of dapple long-haired pups, so she contacts another breeder
and asks for sperm from a male with dapple in his heritage. The
sire owner says she has just the male, he is expensive, but he has
sired multiple litters with 5 out 7 dapple long-haired pups. The
straw of semen arrives and her female is inseminated. When the
pups arrive the breeder is upset because she has only 3 of 7 that
are the desired long-haired dapple phenotype. The breeder asks for
her money back for being misled. Based on what you know about
Mendelian genetics, what can you tell the producer about his claim
to having been sold “defective semen”.
